From Chapter One — The Spark

It happened on a Monday morning. When I walked into the church office, four people were waiting for me: my secretary, the chairman of the deacons, the music director, and Miss Helen.

Miss Helen was ninety-two years old and stood about five-foot three. She had attended that church longer than most people in town had been alive, and she carried herself like someone who knew exactly how much authority that gave her.

She stepped toward me before I could even set my bag down. Her finger came up. "Where are the curtains?"

I knew exactly what she meant. Two days earlier, we had removed a pair of enormous burgundy velvet curtains that hung behind the pulpit. They framed an old baptistry that hadn't been used in over a decade. The curtains were thirty-five feet long and just as old. No one could remember the last time they had been cleaned.

The church itself was nearly a hundred years old. And it was dying.

Early Readers Say

The framework works because
it was built in the fire.

"The chapter on Yield alone was worth the read. I've been measuring the wrong things for years."

David K.
CEO, Regional Manufacturer

"I gave this to my entire leadership team. The S.Y.S.T.E.M.S. audit is what we use in our quarterly reviews now."

Pastor Sarah L.
Executive Pastor, 800-member church

"Finally — a leadership book that doesn't assume you're already healthy. It starts where most people actually are."

Marcus T.
Founder, SaaS Startup
